About
My name is Rafe Stevenson. I’m a photographer based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and I love shooting and developing film. Silver Photo Lab is my film processing business where I specialize in developing and scanning film of many kinds. I decided to start Silver Photo Lab because more and more people are shooting film, but there are almost no high quality developing and scanning services available in Newfoundland.
How It Works
When you go to place an order, you will be prompted to enter your Email address. After placing your order, I will contact you via Email (from silverphotolab@gmail.com) and we will arrange a way for me to receive your film. Once I have your film, it will typically take 1 week or less for it to be developed and scanned. You will receive your photos via Google Drive once the scans are ready. If you request for your negatives to be returned to you, we will also arrange the return through Email.
At the moment I am a one man show, which means my estimated order delivery time of 1 week may not be feasible in some cases. If I have a large number of orders to process, it may take a few extra days to get through it all.
Privacy
I take privacy very seriously. As such, the only person that will ever see your photos before you do is me. I will never share your photos anywhere without your knowledge and express written permission.
After you have received your scans via Google Drive, I will keep the scans for 1 month. Once 1 month has passed, all the photos on the Google Drive and my own computer’s hard drive will be deleted.
If you choose Discard when placing an order, the negatives will be destroyed 1 month after processing. If you choose to keep your negatives but never pick them up, they will be destroyed after 6 months. These delays are in place to ensure the safety of your photos and to make absolutely sure you have the scans in your possession before the negatives are destroyed.
Uncompromising Film Scans
For scanning film, I use a mirrorless camera and a macro lens. It doesn’t sound too fancy, but that doesn’t mean the quality suffers. Quite the opposite actually! You can zoom in on every photo and practically count the grains. If you compare it to a flatbed scan, there is no contest.
I convert all the scans manually using Negative Lab Pro. If you want to get a better idea of how I colour balance my scans, check out these sample photos.
About E6 Processing
Due to the difficulty of obtaining genuine E6 chemistry, the process I use to develop slide film is a “homebrew” chemical recipe. At the moment, I am trying to perfect this process before offering it to customers. If you have slide film that needs developing, stay tuned!
Digitizing Slides and Negatives
If you have some slides or already developed negatives you want scanned, I can do that! If you are interested in this service, please use the contact form below.
